Men’s And Women’s Swimming Both Edged By The Pioneers Wednesday Night

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2011) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams both lost to the visiting Pioneers of William Paterson University Wednesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Pool. The men lost by the score of 128-106 and the women fell, 121-97. Both Privateer teams open the 2011 season with an 0-1 record, while the WPU men improve to 3-1 and the women improve to 4-1.
 
        On the men's side, Maritime earned six first-place finishes on the night, starting off the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay by the team of freshman Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.), sophomore Dominic Pereira (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) and seniors Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) with a time 1:45.18.
 
        Freshman Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph) had the best night for the Privateers, finishing in first place three times: twice individually in the 50-yard free (22.31) and the 100-yard free (50.75) and again in the 200-free relay with Luchsinger, sophomore John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and junior Joe Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) (1:32.82). DaSilva rounded out the first-place swimming finishes with a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.44, while sophomore Jeff Markarian (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) won the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 157.70.
 
        For the women, freshman Mariel VanderLinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy ) (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy) led the team with the only first-place finish on the night in the 50-yard free with a time of 27.44. She also finished in second place in two events: the 200-yard individual medley (2:34.88) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.46).
 
        The Privateers return to action this Sunday Nov. 6, when the teams will travel up to Newburgh, N.Y., to take part in the Mount Saint Mary Invitational hosted by the Skyline Conference opponent. First race is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Blue Knights' Kaplan Center Pool.
