Swim And Dive Teams Have Strong Performances At USMMA Invite Saturday; Haughn Named To Skyline Men’s Swimming Honor Roll

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2011) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the USMMA Invitational this past Saturday at Kings Point. Six schools took part in the event, including four schools from NCAA Division-III. The event was not scored, but the Privateers had many strong performances throughout the day.
 
        Freshman Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) had the highest individual placement for the Maritime men, coming in fourth place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:16.98, beating out a Division-II swimmer from Adelphi. The rookie also finished in sixth place in the 100-backstroke in 1:00.71. Senior Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) and freshman Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) tied for sixth place in the 50-yard freestyle event as the both touched the pad in 23.33. Sophomore diver Jeff Markarian (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) was one of three divers on the day and finished in second place in both the 1-meter dive (143.55) and the 3-meter dive (153.23).
 
        On the women's side, there were a number of eighth place finishes, including two in each of the breaststroke events. Junior Ariel Bebee (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) was eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:27.05, while senior Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) touched eight in the 200-yard event in 3:09.25.
 
        Also, the Skyline Conference announced on Monday that freshman Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) was named to the weekly men's swimming honor roll for his performances in this meet, as well as the meet against Purchase earlier in the week in which he had two first place finishes.         The Privateers will now return to the pool on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they travel to Staten Island to take on the Dolphins of CSI. Meet time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Sports & Recreation Center on the campus of the College of Staten Island.
