THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 11, 2011) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming teams both picked up their first victories of the 2011-12 season Thursday night with wins over Skyline-opponent Old Westbury. The men's squad finished with a 104-86 advantage over the Panthers, while the women were victorious, 116-59. The victories improve both squads to 1-1 on the season (1-0 Skyline), while both OW teams fall to 0-2 (0-1 Skyline).
The men finished in first place in eight of the 11 events, though the last two events were not scored for Maritime. Three swimmers had two first-place finishes, as freshman
Eric Reimer (Salisbury Mills, N.Y./Washingtonville) (Salisbury Mills, N.Y./Washingtonville) won the two distance events, the 1000-free (12:09.34) and the 500-free (6:00.85), sophomore
Dominic Pereira (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) was a part of the team that won the 200-medley relay (1:47.15) and touched first in the 100-breaststroke (1:08.28) and classmate
James Rostrup (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) won the 100-freestyle (1:01.58) and was a part of the team to win the 200-free relay (1:42.36).
The women were led once again by freshman
Mariel Vanderlinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy), who had three first-place finishes in the 200-medley relay (2:16.13), the 50-free (27.81) and the 100-backstroke (1:10.69). Sophomore
Courtney Hill (Palmdale, Calif./Quartz Hill) won the two distance events, the 1000-free (14:59.84) and the 500-free (7:22.17), while seniors
Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon),
Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) and
Leighahn Ferrari (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) both had multi-win nights, Garrido and Ferrari both in the 200-medley relay (2:16.13) and the 200-free relay (2:01.79) and Palino in the 100-butterfly (1:22.58) and the 200-free relay.
The men's and women's swimming and diving squads return to action on Monday night, Nov. 14, when Maritime welcomes in Skyline-foe Purchase. The first race, the women's 200-yard medley relay, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
