LEICESTER, Mass. (Oct. 8, 2011) – The Maritime football team defeated Becker College, 47-19, Saturday afternoon at the Hawks' Alumni Field to improve to 4-1 overall on the season and 2-0 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference action. Leading by just four points at halftime, the Privateers came out strong in the second half and put up 37 points to capture the victory. Becker falls to 1-5 (1-2 ECFC) in defeat.

“Becker played us really well defensively in the first half to keep us out of sync,” said head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes, “but we made adjustments at halftime and our guys responded very well in the second half. At practice, we have been working on playing better in the third quarter, so I was really proud of how our guys responded.”

Maritime kicked off to the Hawks to start the game, but Becker fumbled the return and junior Michael Lorentzen (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) jumped on the ball to give the Privateers possession. The ensuing drive led to a 46-yard field goal by senior Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) to put Maritime ahead, 3-0, just 2:35 into the game. However, the home team would take the lead on the next drive when freshman Kyle Gregg ran a TD in from 12 yards out to cap off a 7-play, 70-yard drive for the Hawks. The missed extra point put Becker ahead, 6-3.

The Privateers next two drives resulted in a punt and an interception, but the defense was strong in the first quarter forcing Becker into two 3-and-outs. Junior Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast) ran in a touchdown from 14 yards out just 1:33 into the second quarter and the PAT by Leary was good to put Maritime ahead, 10-6. The Privateer defense forced another 3-and-out, but another interception by sophomore QB Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) gave Becker the ball back with 8:23 to go in the second. After a 7-play, 24-yard drive, the Hawks freshman Chad Bacon missed a 37-yard field goal which would've brought his team within one. Right before time ran out in the half, Leary missed his own 42-yard attempt and the Privateers went into the locker room up 10-6.

The second half could not have begun better for Maritime as Jean would return the opening kickoff 75 yards to the house to put the Privateers ahead, 17-6. It was Jean's program-leading second career kickoff return for a touchdown, as he also had one for 65 yards during the 2009 season at Mount Ida. The teams then swapped possession without a score as Maritime stopped a fourth-down try before Becker forced a punt. The Hawks scored again with 9:26 to go in the third on the first play of a drive that went for an 80-yard pass from sophomore Robert Baker to freshman DeMon Frazier. The failed two-point run made the game 17-12 in favor of the Privateers.

On the ensuing drive, Trodden hooked up with sophomore Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) for a 58-yard passing TD and Leary's PAT made the score 24-12. Maritime scored one more time in the third quarter on a Trodden rush from two yards out with 1:57 to go. On the first drive of the fourth quarter, Trodden found Davis once again, this time for a 63-yard touchdown reception. Davis ended the day with 121 yard receiving, which is a new Maritime single-game record. The Privateers led, 37-12.

Leary booted the kickoff for an on-side kick and the Privateers jumped on the ball to regain possession. After four plays, Leary would be called on for a 39-yard field goal, which he converted to put Maritime ahead, 40-12. Sophomore Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles) ran in the Privateers' last TD on a 1-yard rush, before Becker ended the scoring with a 45-yard pass TD from Baker to freshman Corinthian Bostic.

On defense, junior Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) led all players with 10 tackles, while classmate Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was a close second with nine. Lasher also had one tackle for a loss of 2 yards. Senior Rob Gorgy (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata (N.J.)) (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) had a game-high three tackles for combined losses of seven yards, while classmate Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) recorded a fourth-quarter interception.

The Privateers had five rushers over 30 yards in the game, led by senior Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) with 55. Trodden ended the game with 174 passing yards on 4-of-12 completions with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Davis led the receiving corps with 121 yards and two scores, while junior Erik Heedles (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) brought in one catch for 32 yards.

For the Hawks, Baker finished the day with 259 pass yards on 14-for-21 completions. Bostic was his top receiver with three catches for 71 yards, while Gregg led all rushers in the game with 59 yards.

Maritime returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 15, when the squad plays host to ECFC-opponent Anna Maria College. The game will be a part of Homecoming Weekend festivities at SUNY Maritime College next weekend. Opening kickoff between the Privateers and AMCATS is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
