Football Week 9 Preview: Privateers Travel To Maine To Face Husson

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2011) – The Maritime football team (6-1, 4-0 ECFC) will travel up to Maine to take on Eastern Collegiate Football Conference opponent Husson University (0-7, 0-4 ECFC) on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon at the Eagles' Winkin Sports Complex.

Privateers Honored Ten Times With ECFC Player Of The Week Accolades

        The Maritime football team has had a Player of the Week by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference a conference-high ten times so far in 2011. After the Week Two win over Western Connecticut, seniors Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) earned Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) and junior Thomas Boney (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian) earned offensive and defensive awards, respectively, after the Week Three win over Kings Point.
 

        Leary was again named Special Teams Player of the Week twice more for Weeks Five and Six. After the Week Seven win over Anna Maria, junior Jeremy Garcia (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was named Defensive Player of the Week and senior Sean Wiggers (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan (N.J.)) (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
 

        The Privateers earned their fourth-straight Special Teams Player of the Week award after the Week Eight win when freshman Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) got the honor, while Spanopoulos earned his second Offensive Player of the Week honor.
 
Inside The Series

        The two teams have met every season since 2006 when Maritime rejoined NCAA Division III. Husson holds a 4-1 lead in the series, but it was the Privateers that won the last meeting in 2010, 47-21, home at Reinhart Field in Week Four.
 

        Then-sophomore quarterback Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North (N.J.)) (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) led the way for Maritime with four rushing touchdowns. With the Privateers trailing 21-19 in the third quarter, Dickey ran in three-straight TDs to propel the team to the victory. Maritime amassed 511 yards of total offense on the day, while keeping Husson to just 162. On defense, then-sophomore Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) led the team with 11 total tackles (eight solo and six assisted), including one for a loss of one yard.
 
Team Comparison Of National Rankings

        Maritime's total offense is ranked 119th in the country (351.00 ypg), but its rushing offense is 13th (263.57 ypg). The squad will be going against Husson's total defense, which ranks 232nd out of 239 teams allowing 476.86 yards per game. On the flip side, the Privateers' defense – 22nd in DIII with 258.86 yards allowed per game – will try to stop the Eagles' 238th ranked offense (158.71 ypg).
 

        Maritime ranks in the top 20 among all DIII schools in six categories: eighth in tackles for losses allowed per game (3.71), ninth in time of possession (34:00), ninth in kickoff return (25.41 yards per return), 13th in rushing offense (263.57 ypg), 18th in sacks allowed per game (0.71) and 20th in pass defense (allowing just 139.43 ypg). Husson is only ranked above 100th in three categories: 33rd in fewest penalties per game (4.57), 45th in yards penalized per game (43.29 ypg) and 82nd in net punting (32.72 yards per game)
 
Maritime Privateer Breakdown

        Maritime's total offense is led by quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), who has rushed for 373 yards and passed for 558 yards. He ranks second on the team in rushing and has two touchdowns on the ground and three scores via the air. Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) is the team's leading rusher and ranks 69th in the country with 89.71 yards per game (628 total yards). He is also tied for 80th in DIII in scoring with 7.71 points per game (54 total). Sophomore Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) is the team's leading receiver with 124 yards on seven receptions with two touchdowns.
 

        On defense, junior Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) leads the team in tackles with 69 total (54 solo and 15 assisted), while his 7.71 solo tackles per game ranks fifth in the nation. He also has a team-high seven tackles for combined losses of 21 yards, including three sacks for losses of 14 yards, to go along with one interception and two forced fumbles. Classmate Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) is second on the squad with 38 tackles.
 

        The Privateers special teams unit has turned up the heat as of late, with the kick return team coming alive in recent games. Freshman Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) has taken over the primary returning duties for the past three games and has returned eight kickoffs a total of 214 yards (26.8 yards per return). Kicking-wise, senior Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) is 6-for-11 in field goals with a long of 47 yards, while he has an average of 52.7 yards per kickoff on 44 kicks this year with two touchbacks. Punting, Leary has an average of 38.5 yards on 19 punts, landing four inside the opponent's 20-yard line and three that were 50-plus yards.
           
Scouting The Husson Eagles

        Under first-year head coach Sean Murphy, the Eagles have had a rough start to the 2011 season, losing all seven of its contests, including last week's 41-7 loss at home to Norwich. The Eagles offense is led by junior QB Kash Keezer, who has thrown for 996 yards on 86-of-211 passing with five touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Keezer also has one of the team's two rushing touchdowns on the year. Husson's top running back is freshman Imadhi Zagon with 101 yards on 47 carries, while classmate Ryan Dorso has 31 rushing yards and has scored the other TD on the ground.
 

        The receiving corps is led by sophomore Ben Foss, who has 266 yards on 17 catches with one touchdown. Senior Audie Murphy ranks second with 248 receiving yards and three TDs.
 

        On defense, freshman Stephan Dance has a team-high 67 tackles, including three for combined losses of five yards. Senior Chris Dalecki leads the team in tackles for losses with nine for combined losses of 32 yards, including four sacks for 18 yards. Classmate Kyle Vanidestine has a team-high three interceptions.
 

        The special teams for the Eagles is led by senior returner Audie Murphy, who has amassed 399 returning yards on 25 kickoffs for an average of 16.0 yards per return. Sophomore Doug Dieuvieul is Husson's primary place-kicker and freshman Kyle Bishop is the team's punter.
