THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2011) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated visiting non-conference opponent Brooklyn College Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Pool. The men won by the score of 136-72 and improve to 6-2 on the season, while the women improve to 3-7 overall after their 116-87 victory. The Bulldogs fall to 1-6 on the men's side and the women drop to 3-8.
The Privateers won all but one race on the night and were led by freshman John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), who won all three races he competed in starting with the 400-yard medley relay to start of the meet. Individually, he won the 200 IM (2:24.35) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.44). Junior Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) also won three events, including the 400 medley relay. He also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.11 and was a member of the 400-yard free relay team that touched first in 3:39.42. Those last two races did not count for the Maritime men, who coasted to the easy victory. 12 different individuals claimed first place for Maritime including all relays and individual performances.
The women were led by junior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle), who won two events: the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.87) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:12.58). Four other women finished first for the Privateers: freshman Ariel Beebe (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) (2:57.35 in the 200 IM), junior Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (105.10 points in the 1-meter dive), freshman Kwantisha Lozada (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (7:40.30 in the 500 free) and junior Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) (1:29.48 in the 100 breast).
For Brooklyn, junior Lucie O'Donnell was a part of two first place finishes: the 400 medley relay and the 1000 yard freestyle. On the men's side, junior Roman Vilnyanskiy won the 50 yard free.
Maritime returns to action next Thursday, Feb. 3, when the squads play host to Skyline Conference-foe Mount Saint Mary. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
