THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 20, 2011) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams both lost to visiting Baruch College Wednesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Pool. With the losses, the men fall to 5-2 overall and the women fall to 2-7, while Baruch men improve to 6-4 and the women move to 8-3.
The men finished two races in first place. Junior Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.01 and was the third leg of the 200 yard freestyle relay team with freshman John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), senior Joseph Bosch (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and junior Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) that touched first in 1:35.49.
On the women's side, the Privateers registered one first-place finish on the night. Junior Leighahn Ferrari (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) won the 50 yard-freestyle with a time of 29.56. She was the only swimmer in the race that finished under 30 seconds. Maritime also captured second place in three events. Junior Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) was the only diver of the meet and she recorded a score of 112.50 for the one-meter dive and 106.70 for the three-meter.
The squads return to action next Tuesday, Jan. 25, when they play host to non-conference opponent Brooklyn College of the CUNYAC. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
