THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2010) – The Maritime women's soccer team lost to conference-opponent St. Joseph's-L.I., 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at Reinhart Field. In defeat, the Privateers fall to 0-10 (0-3 Skyline) on the season, while the Golden Eagles improve to 7-5-1 (4-0 Skyline).
Senior goalkeeper Andria Thornton (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) was strong in net for Maritime, making 10 saves, including seven in the first half alone. Sophomore Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) recorded three shots on goal for the Privateers but St. Joe's fresman keeper Kayla Flowers was able to stop the chances. Freshman Alicia Phrachansiri (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata Senior) (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata Senior) registered Maritime's fourth shot on goal in the second half, but was also stopped.
The Golden Eagles struck early in the game, finding the back of the net in the second minute when Michelle Barclay received a pass from Michelle Gulino on the right side and shot it in for the 1-0 lead. In the 16th minute, Samantha Garcia tallied a goal after a breakaway from close to midfield. St. Joseph's third goal came off a corner kick where the ball hit a Maritime defender and caromed into the net.
The Privateers return to action this Saturday, Oct. 2, when they travel to face Skyline Conference opponent NYU-Poly. Game time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
