Anthony Mendez Named Skyline Men’s Lacrosse Rookie Of The Week; Alex Korb Lands On Weekly Honor Roll

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 6, 2010) – Maritime freshman Anthony Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, N.Y.) was named the Skyline Conference men's lacrosse Rookie of the Week, as announced by conference commissioner Tracy King, after his performances in the Privateers' losses to Farmingdale State and Plattsburgh State last week.

 

Mendez started the week by recording an assist and one shot in the 16-14 loss to the Rams on Wednesday night at home. The 5-10, 155-pounder then had the best game of his young career with a hat trick on the road at Plattsburgh State on Saturday. He scored two second-quarter goals, including one on a man-up opportunity, and then found the back of the net again the fourth quarter. He also picked up two ground balls in the loss.

 

Junior Alex Korb (Islip, N.Y.) also received accolades from the conference on Monday, as he was named to the Skyline men's lacrosse weekly honor roll. Korb scored a Privateer-leading six goals on the week, including four against Farmingdale State on Wednesday. He also recorded three assists in that game.

After recording a team-leading six assists over the past two games last week, senior Ryan Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y.) is currently tied for sixth in the conference with 1.56 helpers per game. Classmate and goalie Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Minneapolis, Minn.) ranks fourth in the league with a .521 save percentage and is fifth with 12.29 saves per game.

 

The Privateers return to action Wednesday, April 7, when they play host to Skyline-opponent Bard at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
