UNION, N.J. (April 24, 2010) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost to conference-opponent Kean, 6-3, in a low-scoring regular-season finale in the Garden State. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 5-9 overall (3-3 Skyline), while the Cougars improve to 11-5 (5-1 Skyline).
Senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) (Yorktown, N.Y.) and juniors Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) (Owego, N.Y.) and Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y.) all scored for Maritime. Doherty also added an assist to lead the Privateers with two points. Senior goalie Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) (Minneapolis, Minn.) made a season-high 18 saves and picked up a team-best seven ground balls in the losing effort.
The first quarter was scoreless, with Kean outshooting Maritime, 9-5. The Cougars got on the board first in the second quarter when Jazimar Bailey scored at 14:13. They would add another at 7:00 from Anthony Bertucci to make it 2-0. Collins scored his goal on an assist from Doherty with just over one minute to play in the first half.
In the second half, Korb found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2 just over a minute into play. Kean scored the next four goals, however, to go up 6-2. Maritime tallied late, as Doherty scored with 21 seconds remaining to end the scoring on the day.
Bertucci had two goals for the Cougars and Scott Leathem pitched in with two assists. Bailey had his goal and one assist, while goalie Greg Egan got the victory after making three saves. Andrew Rau led all players with eight ground balls.
Maritime has earned the No. 4-seed in the 2010 Skyline Conference Tournament, which will begin on Wednesday, April 24. The Privateers will travel to face top-seeded and nationally ranked Montclair State in New Jersey. Game time will be posted online on Monday.
