THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 7, 2010) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost to Oswego State of the SUNYAC, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The Privateers fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Lakers improve to an even 1-1.
 
Juniors Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) both scored two goals apiece for Maritime, while senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) recorded two assists and freshman Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also added a helper in the losing effort.
 
All the scoring in the first half came in the opening quarter, as Oswego got on the board first with a tally at 11:46. The Lakers then added two more just 1:11 apart to increase their lead to 3-0. Maritime cut the lead to two when Korb scored with just 14 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
 
An Oswego goal that would've made it 4-1 was disallowed at 6:46 of the third quarter due to an illegal stick 3-minute penalty. The Privateers could not take advantage of the man-up opportunity, but Hanratty found the back of the net to open the scoring in the second half with 3:44 remaining in the third to make the score 3-2, Oswego. Messina assisted on the goal. The Lakers answered back just less than two minutes later to go back up by two, 4-2
 
Hanratty scored his second after when he took a pass from Doherty and rifled a shot past the Oswego goalie at 10:53 of the fourth on a man-up opportunity, but again the Lakers were quick to respond with a goal at 9:18 to increase their lead to 5-3. Korb inched the Privateers closer with another man-up goal with 6:51 to play, however Oswego regained the two-goal lead with a goal at 5:18.
 
Doherty also led Maritime with six ground balls, while junior Jonathan Miracolo (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) and sophomores Ryan Honey (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) each recorded five ground balls apiece. 
In net for the Privateers, senior tri-captain Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) recorded seven saves.
 
The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, March 10, when they travel to Middletown, Conn. to take on non-conference opponent Wesleyan. First faceoff against the Cardinals is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wesleyan's Home-Smith Turf Field.
