MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (March 10, 2010) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost to No. 11 Wesleyan, 14-1, Wednesday night at the Cardinals' Home-Smith Turf Field. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 1-3 on the season, while Wesleyan improves to 2-0.
Maritime was out-shot 25-7 the first half, as the Cardinals built up a 7-0 lead that they took into the locker room. Junior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored the Privateers' lone goal off an assist by classmate Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) at 5:53 of the third quarter, cutting Wesleyan's lead to 10-1.
Senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn./Westhill) and junior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) split time in goal. Gallagher, who played the entire first half and made nine saves, was credited with the loss and moves to 1-2 on the season. Messina made 11 saves in the second half.
The Privateers return to action on St. Patrick's Day, Wednesday, March 17, when they travel across the Long Island Sound to take on rival Kings Point. First faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Mariners' Captain James Harvey Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium.
