Men’s Swimming Downs Mount Saint Mary, 121-80; Women Fall 111-70

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 5, 2010) – The Maritime men's swimming team defeated Skyline Conference-foe Mount Saint Mary, 121-80, Thursday night at the Blue Knights' Elaine and William Kaplan Center Pool. With the win, the Privateers improve to 6-3 overall, including a perfect 3-0 against Skyline opponents, while Mount Saint Mary falls to 9-3 (2-1 Skyline).

 

Maritime picked up six first place finishes at the meet, starting with the very first, the 200 yard medley relay. The Privateers' A team of juniors Joseph Cooney (Cranford, N.J./Union Catholic) and Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), sophomore Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and freshman Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) touched first with a time of 1:51.78. Tucker earned the next win for Maritime by swimming a 1:56.48 in the 200 yard freestyle, the only time under two minutes in the race and then Day was victorious in the 200 yard IM, finishing in 2:17.24.

 

Sophomore Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) earned the Privateers' fourth and fifth wins of the meet by touching first in the 100 yard freestyle in 52.73, before beating out all opponents in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.12. The 200 yard freestyle squad of junior Joseph Bosch (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), freshman John Covell (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake ), DaSilva and Tucker won the final race of the meet in 1:37.93.

 

Also Thursday night, the Maritime women's team lost to the Blue Knights women's team, 111-70. In defeat, the Privateers fall to 1-9 (1-3 Skyline), while Mount Saint Mary improves to 15-1 (5-0 Skyline). Maritime's only win of the night came in the 100 yard breaststroke by junior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle), who finished with a time of 1:08.67. The Privateers had three second place finishes on the night.

 

The Maritime men's and women's swimming teams return to the pool on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Purchase, N.Y. to take part in the 2009 Skyline Conference Championship. The men will be looking for their third-consecutive championship at the event, which will be held at SUNY Purchase's Aquatics Center.
