Women's Results – Maritime won 123-54
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2010) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming teams completed a sweep of Skyline Conference opponent Old Westbury Thursday night at the Old Westbury Aquatic Center. The men, who won 137-64, captured their fifth straight victory and improved to 5-1 on the season (2-0 Skyline). With their 123-34 win over the Panthers, the women have now strung together back-to-back victories after a 57-32 triumph over CNR earlier this week at St. Joseph's and move to 2-6 overall (1-2 Skyline).
The women won all but one race on the day and were led by junior Leighahn Ferrari (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who won three events on the day. Ferrari was a member of the 200 medley relay team the touched first with a time of 2:27.07 and won both the 50 yard free (28.85) and the 100 yard free (1:06.56). Junior Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) and freshman Courtney Hill (Palmdale, Calif./Quartz Hill) were also on the 200 medley relay team, but also teamed up with freshmen Ariel Beebe (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central School) and Kwantisha Lozada (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) in the 200 free relay to finish first with a time of 2:08.23. Garrido and Hill also won their individual events, Garrido the 100 breaststroke (1:27.72) and Hill the 500 free (7:26.97).
Sophomore Kristen Wilson (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) won the 200 free relay with Ferrari, Garrido and Lozada and also won the 200 free with a time of 2:54.71. Lozada won the Beebe won the 100 butterfly (1:22.72) and freshman Hannah Margolias (Palenville, N.Y./Catskill) touched first in the 200 IM in 2:52.54.
The men won seven races on the night, starting with the 200 medley relay team of juniors Willam DeFries (Salem, S.C./D.W.Daniel) and Robert Keavney (Pittsgrove, N.J./Sacred Heart) (Pittsgrove, N.J./Sacred Heart), sophomore Arthur Seaman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Dominic Pereira (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher), who touched first with a time of 1:57.15. The Privateers claimed the top three spots in both distance events, the 1000 free and 500 free, both of which freshman Paul Broderick (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip ) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) won (12:14.54 for 1000 and 5:54.17 for 500).
Seaman led all Maritime swimmers with three wins. He was a part of the 200 medley relay team and the 200 free relay team that touched in 1:40.88. Individually, he touched first in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.99. Freshmen David Mierzwa (Tonawanda, N.Y./St. Joseph's College) (Tonawanda, N.Y./St. Joseph's College), Leo Pelletier (Salem, Conn./East Lyme ) (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and James Rostrup (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) were also on the 200 free relay team. Individually, Rostrup won the 50 free in 23.89 and sophomore Nicolas Diverde (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa ) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) touched first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.08.
The Privateer men and women swimming and diving teams now go into the winter break and will return to the pool in the new year, on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, when they play host to non-conference opponent Baruch at the Riesenberg Hall Pool. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m.
