THROGGS NECK N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2010) – The victory horn sounded loudly as the Maritime men's swimming team defeated Division-II opponent Queens College, 132-97, Tuesday evening at the Riesenberg Hall Pool. The win improves the Privateers' record to 3-1 overall on the season. The women fell to the Knights, 140-68, to fall to 0-4 overall on the young season.
The men, who trailed going into the diving competitions, came in first place in six events on the night. The Privateers took advantage in the diving portion, as freshman Jeff Markarian (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and sophomore Robert Bunch (Florence, S.C./Camden Military Academy (Mass.)) (Florence, S.C./Camden) were the only divers. Junior Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) was a part of two wins for Maritime, placing first in the 100 yard butterfly in 55.00 and leading off the 200 yard freestyle relay team that touched first with a time of 1:33.02.
Junior Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai), who anchored the 200 yard free relay team, also won the 100 yard freestyle event, barely touching out his Queens College counterpart with a time of 49.74. Sophomore Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward) (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward) beat out the field in the 100 yard backstroke, touching in 1:03.00.
On the women's side, individually, Maritime registered five second place finishe. Senior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) came in as the runner up twice: in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:43.49 and the 100 yard backstroke in 1:12.16. Freshman Kwantisha Lozada (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) came in second in the 1000 yard freestyle, touching in 15:37.41, while junior Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (North Babylon, N.Y. / North Babylon) touched second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:15.89. Junior Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) came in second place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:29.08.
The Privateers return to the pool this Thursday, Dec. 2, when the squads travel to the other side of the Bronx to take on Lehman College. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m.
