THROGGS NECK N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2010) – In front of its first home crowd of the season at the Riesenberg Hall Pool Tuesday night, the Maritime men's swimming and diving team used superior depth and came from behind to defeat the visiting College of Staten Island, 126-113. The Privateer men trailed by two points going into the final event of the night, the 200 yard freestyle relay, but earned the top two spots in it to clinch the victory.
The Dolphins were able to finish in first place in 10 of the 13 events on the evening, but Maritime followed with the next two spots in nine of those 10 events to win the events, and taking the next three spots in five of the 10.
The Privateers took first place in three events: freshman diver Jeff Markarian (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) won the 1-meter diving competition with 199.80 points, junior Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) won the 100 yard freestyle in 50.02 and the 200 yard relay team of senior Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), junior Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), sophomore Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Luchsinger touched first with a time of 1:32.20.
The women were leading in the beginning of the night, but CSI was able to come back and record the victory in the end. The Privateers won three events on the evening: the 200 yard medley relay team of senior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle), junior Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee), junior Leighahn Ferrari (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman Kwantisha Lozada (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) finished first to earn 11 points, Garrido won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:27.48 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Hickey, Ferrari, freshman Courtney Hill (Palmdale, Calif./Quartz Hill) and Lozada touched first in 2:00.47.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action next Tuesday, Nov. 30, when the Privateers play host to the Queens College Knights. The first race is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
