Privateers Improve To 5-0 With Road Victory Over Anna Maria, 43-20

- The Maritime football team defeated conference-opponent Anna Maria College, 43-20, Saturday afternoon on the road at AMCAT Field to improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season. The Privateers move to 2-0 in ECFC action, while Anna Maria falls to 0-5 (0-2 ECFC).

Junior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) scored two rushing touchdowns and led the Privateer ground attack with 84 yards on the day. Maritime recorded a total of 280 rushing yards and outgained the AMCATs 379-272 in total offense in the game.

On defense, sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) led all players with seven tackles, while classmate Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded 5.5 tackles and an interception that was returned for 40 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

The Privateers grabbed an early 13-0 lead after scoring the first two touchdowns of the day in the first quarter on a five yard run by senior John Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and a 56 yard passing touchdown from sophomore Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North (N.J.)) (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) to classmate Erik Heedles (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp). Anna Maria cut the lead to 13-6 with a second quarter 10 yard rushing touchdown by quarterback
Santino Simone.

Maritime scored on the next possession to go ahead 20-6 on a one yard run by Spanopoulos, his first of the game. In the closing seconds of the second quarter, senior Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) kicked the Privateers' first field goal of the season to go ahead 23-6.

In the start of the second half, the Maritime defense scored a touchdown when Lasher picked off a Simone pass and returned the interception 40 yards for the TD, giving the Privateers a 30-6 lead. Maritime scored again just over three minutes later on another one yard run by Spanopoulos. Anna Maria answered on their next drive on a two yard run by
Chris Meadows to make the game 36-13.

Freshman fullback Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles (Fla.)) (
Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) scored his first career touchdown on a one yard run late in the third. A 20 yard passing touchdown from Simone to David Marsh ended the scoring on the afternoon with the Privateers leading, 43-20.

Maritime returns to action next Saturday, when the squad travels to Castleton, Vt., to take on ECFC-opponent Castleton State. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at Castleton's Spartan Stadium.
