Men's And Women's Swimming Defeat Old Westbury

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2009) – The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up victories over conference-opponent Old Westbury Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The men won by a score of 120-49 to improve to 4-2 overall (2-0 Skyline), while the women picked up their first win of the season, 74-5, but lost to St. Joseph's, 55-39, to move to 1-6 overall (1-2 Skyline).

 

The Privateers men captured the top spots in each event on the evening, which started with a win in the 200 yard medley relay from the team of freshmen Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward), Nicholas Diverde, Ryan McDonald and sophomore Robert Keavney (Pittsgrove, N.J./Sacred Heart) in 2:01.37. Sophomore Daniel Gerlach picked up the victory in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:54.60, followed by a win by freshman Benjamin Pearce (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) in the 200 yard freestyle in 2:22.46.

 

Sophomore William DeFries (Salem, S.C./D.W.Daniel) captured the win in the 50 yard freestyle in 26.66, while Hudson got his second victory of the day in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:23.59. Keavney won again in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.91), Pearce won his second in the 100 yard free (1:00.93) and DeFries earned his second win of the night in the 100 yard backstroke (1:07.80). Gerlach and Diverde joined their teammates with two wins when Gerlach touched first in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:44.58 and Diverde won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:15.19. The Privateers last win of the evening came in the 200 yard freestyle relay when the team of Pearce freshman Maximilian Soucy (Midlothian, Va./Fork Union (Mass.)), Gerlach and Keavney touched first with a time of 1:44.49.

 

The women had three first place finishes on the night and sophomore Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) claimed the first two: in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:34.26 and the 100 yard backstroke when she touched first in 1:10.41. Freshman Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) notched the other win for the Privateers in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:25.14.

 

The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams are now done for the fall 2009 semester and will begin competition again in the New Year. The first meet is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2010, when the teams will travel to Baruch to take on the Bearcats. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the ARC Aquatic Center on the campus of Baruch.
