FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2009) – The Maritime men's swimming and diving team defeated NCAA Division-II opponent Queens College in a nail-biter, 111-108, Monday night in Queens, while the Privateers women's team lost to the Knights, 85-53. With the victory, the men improve to 2-2 overall on the season, while the women fall to 0-4.
On the men's side, Queens was controlling the early part of the meet before the Privateers earned their first victory in the 10th event, the 200 Yard IM. Sophomore Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) took the top spot and earned nine points for the Privateers after finishing with a time of 2:09.44. (69.3) finished in that order. Another first place finish, this by sophomore Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) with a time of 51.01 in the 100 yard freestyle, would be the Privateers' last until the final event of the evening.
In that 26th and final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, Maritime's A-team of DaSilva, sophomore Joseph Bosch (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), junior-captain Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and freshman Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) touched just two seconds before the Knight's A-team to take 11 points and claim the narrow victory in the meet, 111-108.
The women's team was led by freshman Kristen Wilson (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), who collected 18 points combined for the Privateers in two events: the 50 yard freestyle (34.83) and the 100 yard freestyle (1:17.24). Junior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) also grabbed nine points in the 200 yard IM after finishing with a time of 2:35.00.
The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to the pool on Thursday, Dec. 3, when they host Lehman College at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Swimming and Diving Facility.
