Men’s Swimming Defeats Purchase, 94-53, On Tuesday; Women Fall, 109-84

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2009) – The Maritime men's swimming team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Purchase at home on Tuesday, 94-53, to move to 1-1 on the season, while the Privateer women lost to the Panthers, 109-84, and fall to 0-2 to start the year.

 

The men earned the top spots at the first six events. The 200 yard medley relay team of freshman Fritz Beyer, sophomore Benjamin Ingersoll, freshman Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward) and freshman Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) finished first with a time of 1:46.92. Junior captain Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and freshman Arthur Seaman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) earned a combined 13 points finishing first and second, respectively, in the 1000 yard freestyle. Day swam 12:02.44, while Seaman was behind him with a time of 12:16.16. Sophomore Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.89, as he was the only swimmer in the race to be under two minutes. Hudson won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.48, while freshman John Covell (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake ) finished first in the 100 yard freestyle swimming a 55.87.

 

On the women's side, junior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) finished first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:08.58, earning nine points for the Privateers. Maritime also got nine from junior Joanne Rydzewski (Floral Park, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) twice, as she swam a 7:39.40 in the 500 yard freestyle and a 1:31.67 in the 100 yard breaststroke.

 

            The Maritime men's and women's swimming squads return to action on Saturday, Nov. 21, when they travel across the Long Island Sound to compete in the USMMA Invitational at Kings Point. First race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
