Mickey Rehring was introduced as Maritime’s Head Football coach on Feb. 25, 2019. In his first season at the helm, he led the Privateers to the NCAA Tournament.
Maritime earned the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference’s (ECFC) automatic NCAA bid after going 3-2 in conference play during the 2019 season. The Privateers made their first NCAA appearance since 2010, falling to top-seeded Salisbury in the first round. Maritime had 17 players earn All-ECFC honors that season, including Offensive Lineman of the Year Michael Korwan and Special Teams Player of the Year Joseph Gagliardi. Gagliardi would go on to win ECFC Special Teams Player of the Year awards again in 2021, when he was also a D3football.com All-Region and Third All-America selection.
After the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Privateers went 3-6 in 2021, including back-to-back victories at Dean and at home over Keystone. In 2022, Maritime earned a dramatic 17-14 win over Mass Maritime in the Chowder Bowl and handed ECFC champion Gallaudet its only conference loss of the season.
During Rehring’s tenure, Maritime has had 41 all-conference selections, and at least one Privateer has been chosen to the All-ECAC squad each year. In addition, his teams have found success in the classroom, with 27 Privateers earning ECFC All-Academic Team recognition and 55 players being named to the ECFC Academic Honor Roll.
Rehring came to Maritime after seven seasons as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Johns Hopkins University from 2012-18. During that time, the Blue Jays posted a 64-8 overall record, including a 58-2 mark in the regular season, captured seven straight Centennial Conference championships, and won seven NCAA Tournament games. Johns Hopkins made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament semifinals in 2018. Rehring had the most wins of any coordinator in legendary Johns Hopkins Head Coach Jim Margraff’s 29-year tenure.
He was the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018, when the Blue Jays’ defense ranked among the top 50 nationally in eight of 10 major statistical categories. Johns Hopkins had two shutouts that season, including a 49-0 victory over MIT in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Johns Hopkins led the conference in scoring defense every season between 2014-18 and was also first in passing defense four times during that span (2014, 2016-18). In 2015, the Blue Jays ranked second nationally in turnovers gained. Johns Hopkins twice finished first in the Centennial Conference in red zone defense (2014, 2016), and ranked among the top 10 nationally in sacks two times (eighth in 2013, fourth in 2017). In total, Rehring coached 37 all-conference players and four Centennial Conference Defensive Players of the Year during his eight seasons at Johns Hopkins.
From 2009-12, Rehring was a member of the staff at Bowdoin College, where he served as both Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach. Under his leadership, the Polar Bears’ special teams unit ranked first in the conference and 10
th in the nation in kickoff return average during the 2010 season.
A four-year starter on the defensive line at Franklin & Marshall College, Rehring earned second team all-conference honors in 2005. Upon graduation, he began his coaching career at his alma mater, holding the titles of Defensive Line Coach, Assistant Video Coordinator and Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach during his time on the Diplomats’ staff.
