Russ O'Reilly 2013 ICS

Russ O'Reilly

Russ O’Reilly is in his fifth year as head sailing coach at Maritime in 2013-14. Since his arrival the Privateer sailing team has continued to enjoy its status as one of the strongest college sailing programs in the Mid-Atlantic Conference and has been consistently ranked in the top 20 teams in the nation.

Prior to arriving at Maritime, he was the head sailing coach of the Antilles School in the U.S. Virgin Islands, leading the team to three consecutive national championship berths.

A 2007 graduate of the College of Charleston, O'Reilly brings a wealth of small-boat racing experience and a strong drive to continue pushing Maritime to the top of the national collegiate sailing rankings.

While at the College of Charleston, O’Reilly competed in six national championship events between 2005 and 2007, winning three. He led the Charleston Cougars to consecutive National Championship wins in fleet racing in 2006 and 2007, first winning the B division in 2006 and the A division in 2007.

In the fall of his senior year, he also competed in and won the National Sloop Championship in J22’s. He was named a two-time ISCA All-American skipper, as well as being twice named to the ICSA All-Academic Team. In addition, he was named one of three finalists for the Everett B. Morris College Sailor of the Year Trophy, the highest individual honor attainable in collegiate sailing. Finally, his two National Championship wins in his senior year led the school to the Fowle Trophy, awarded annually to the top overall college sailing team in the country.

O’Reilly is currently active in a variety of one-design classes and an avid team racer. Please don’t hesitate to email him at roreilly@sunymaritime.edu with any questions about the varsity sailing program at Maritime!
