THROGGS NECK, NY – An eight-day break did little slow down the Maritime College baseball team's offense. In their first game since April 14, the Privateers (16-11) scored in every inning en route to an 18-3 triumph over CCNY (12-16) at Reinhart Baseball Field on Wednesday night.
After Maritime plated two runs in the bottom of the first,
Dylan Payano (Flushing, NY) made it 5-0 with a three-run homer to center in the second. The Privateers then put up a five-spot in the third despite hitting only one ball out of the infield—an RBI double to right by
Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY). In the fourth,
Guytano Kiesel (Bayport, NY) delivered an RBI double to right before scoring on the back end of a double steal.
He ripped another double with the bases loaded in the fifth, increasing Maritime's advantage to 16-1. Kiesel then came around on an error for the Privateers' 17
th run. James Anderson hit a two-run homer for the Beavers in the top of the sixth before
Daniel Noebel (Rockville Centre, NY) countered with his first collegiate long ball (and hit), a solo shot to left leading off the bottom half of the inning. CCNY would leave runners stranded on second and third in the top of the seventh, as
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) struck out Alex Rodriguez to finish off the 18-3 victory.
Seven different pitchers each threw an inning for Maritime.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (3-1) got the start and was credited with the win. Five of the seven hurlers recorded a pair of strikeouts, while
Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) and
Francis Montalvo (College Point, NY) each tossed a 1-2-3 inning.
Offensively, the Privateers pounded out 13 hits and drew 11 walks. Kiesel reached base all four times, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks, two doubles, four runs scored and four RBIs. Payano, meanwhile, was 3-for-4 with a homer, three runs scored and five RBIs. Goodman and
Ralph Viggiano (Miller Place, NY) both scored three times, while Viggiano and
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) stole three bases apiece.
For the Beavers, Gerard Molinaro went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. CCNY used six pitchers, with starter Alexander Rozon (0-1) suffering the loss. He wasn't able to get out of the first, allowing two runs on three walks and a hit over 0.2 innings.
This was Maritime's final non-conference game of the season. The Privateers (11-1 Skyline) resume Skyline play with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at defending conference champion Farmingdale (13-9, 6-4 Skyline) on Friday.
