AUBURNDALE, FL – After having its first five games wiped out because of winter weather in the Northeast, the Maritime College baseball team finally got its 2026 campaign underway on Wednesday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Privateers (0-1) began the season against St. John Fisher for the second straight year, falling to the Cardinals (6-2) by a 14-8 count at Lake Myrtle Park.
St. John Fisher jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Maritime got one back on
Randy Ventura's (Syosset, NY) RBI single in the second. The Cardinals put up a seven-spot in their half of the inning, though, to increase their advantage to 10-1.
Guytano Kiesel (Bayport, NY) roped an RBI double in the top the third, but St. John Fisher again countered with a tally of its own.
In the top of the fifth, the Privateers trimmed the margin to 11-5.
Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) drew a bases loaded walk, then two runs came across on an error. Maritime added another tally on
Owen Weber's (Kings Park, NY) RBI single in the sixth. After the Cardinals plated three in the bottom of the eighth,
Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) knocked in two on a ninth-inning double, making the final score 14-8.
As a team, the Privateers collected nine hits. Picarella was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) also had two hits and crossed the plate once.
Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) (0-1) got the start on the mound and took the loss. He allowed three runs on two hits, walked three and struck out two. Maritime used six pitchers in the contest, with
Andrew Cavagnaro (Staten Island, NY) and
Jackson Tucholski (Massapequa, NY) combining to throw five innings of one-run relief in their respective collegiate debuts.
For St. John Fisher, Jordan Perry went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jack Griffin scored three times, and Jacob Penafeather ended up 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mario Cubello came around twice and drove in a pair, while Noah Pohrte recorded two hits and two RBIs. Starting pitcher Sean Cleary (1-0) earned the win after surrendering two runs on four hits in four innings of work. He struck out six and walked one.
The Privateers continue their Florida trip on Thursday, when they face Keystone (4-2) at 10 a.m.
