Privateers Shut Out Baruch Twice

THROGGS NECK, NY – Joe Demos (South Hempstead, NY) and Ryan Morash (Merrick, NY) each threw a five-hit shutout on Saturday, as the Maritime College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Baruch at Reinhart Baseball Field.  Demos (1-0) pitched the opener, an 11-0 triumph, while Morash (1-1) earned the win in Game 2, a 9-0 victory by the Privateers (2-6) over the Bearcats (0-8).

Playing as the visiting team in its home park, Maritime struck immediately in Game 1 with a four-run first.  After Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) walked and Dylan Payano (Flushing, NY) singled, Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) crushed a three-run homer to left.  Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) followed with a double, moved to third on Chris Picarella's (Levittown, NY) single, then scored on an error.  The Privateers added four more in the third, with Guytano Kiesel (Bayport, NY) driving in two with a single before coming around on an error.  Another error allowed Dominick Viggiano (Miller Place, NY) to score, making it 8-0.

Maritime increased its advantage to 11-0 with a three-spot in the top of the sixth.  The Privateers put the first two hitters on when Viggiano was hit by a pitch and Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) singled.  Payano then knocked them both in with a single to left.  He later came around on a Weber single.

That was more than enough offense for Demos, who didn't allow a hit until Frank Scerra's leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth.  Baruch only had a runner reach second base once—with two outs in the fifth.  After an infield single leading off the bottom of the seventh, Demos induced his third double play ball of game before Matthew Rappa flied to center for the final out.  Overall, he struck out eight and walked three in the win.

Payano and Weber each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the contest.  Viggiano also scored twice, while Kiesel had two RBIs and Bardi's three-run blast was his second homer of the season.

Baruch starter John Kim (0-2) lasted five innings and took the loss.  He yielded eight runs (six earned) on eight hits, issued three walks and was credited with five strikeouts.  Lorenzo Rodriguez allowed two runs, while Mattew Rao pitched the final two innings.  He allowed one run on two hits and had one strikeout.

In Game 2, Maritime recorded an unearned run in the top of the first before tallying three in the third.  Bardi and Weber started the inning with back-to-back doubles, while Picarella and Ventura each knocked an RBI single.  The Privateers then made it 8-0 with four more in the fourth.  Five of Maritime's first six hitters in the inning reached base, and Viggiano capped the rally by singling home two with the bases loaded.

After the Bearcats left three runners on over the first two innings, Morash allowed just six Baruch baserunners the rest of the way.  The Bearcats had a runner on third with two down in the fifth, but he was left stranded when the next hitter grounded out.  Baruch put runners on first and second in the sixth before Morash got another inning-ending ground ball.  He then worked around a two-out walk in the seventh to finish off the Privateers' second shutout victory of the day.  It was the first time Maritime swept a twinbill without allowing a run since March 30, 2024, when the Privateers defeated St. Joseph's Brooklyn 5-0 and 7-0.

Six Maritime players had multiple hits in the contest, as the Privateers belted out 15 hits as a team.  Weber was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Bardi ended up 2-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.  Viggiano went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Picarella crossed the plate twice.  Goodman and Payano each added two hits and a run scored.  On the mound, Morash notched five strikeouts and three walks.

For the Bearcats, Giuseppe Buffolino finished 3-for-3, with Kenneth Pastrana and Matthew Rappa both contributing singles.  Andrew Lapointe (0-2) pitched 3.1 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Benjamin Norwood surrendered one unearned run and four hits over the final 3.2 innings.  He struck out five and walked two.

On Sunday, Maritime welcomes Plattsburgh (7-1) to Reinhart Baseball Field for a doubleheader.  Game 1 is set to get underway at 12 p.m.
