RIVERDALE, NY – The Maritime College men's and women's cross country teams returned to action for the first time in nearly a month on Sunday afternoon, and
Chase Miller (West Islip, NY) picked up right where he left off. Miller claimed the individual title at the Queensborough Invitational from Van Cortlandt Park, leading the Privateers to seventh place in the team standings. The women's team, meanwhile, finished eighth.
Miller's time of 26:12.76 was the school record for an 8000-meter course, breaking Jack Lehnhardt's mark of 26:29.9 set in 2021. It was also more than two and a half minutes faster than the second-place finisher, Monroe's Zachary Roome, who posted a 28:50.84 clocking.
Mickey Beser (Bel Air, MD) also placed in the top 10. He took ninth overall in 29:41.35.
Neil Landow (Pamlico County, NC) finished 36
th in 32:18.29, while
Philip Downes (Levittown, NY) captured 47
th place in 33:08.09.
Ben Spellman (Hampton Bays, NY) was Maritime's top non-freshman. He ended up 86
th overall in 36:34.96.
As a team, the Privateers collected 158 points, which was just two points shy of Queens for sixth place overall out of 17 teams. Miller, meanwhile, beat 156 other entrants in the race.
In the women's race, Maritime posted a total score of 217 points for eighth place in the team standings. The Privateers finished just six points behind seventh-place St. Joseph's LI.
Cindy Chen (Huntington Station, NY) led the way for Maritime with a 17
th-place showing. She ran 6000 meters in 23:10.62.
DoriEllen Padden grabbed 38
th place with a 25:14.33 clocking, while
Olivia Capobianco (Massapequa, NY) took 58
th in 26:28.79.
Eily Kochon (Ulster Park, NY) finished in 61
st place (26:43.64), and
Erin Doyle (Munich, Germany) rounded out the Privateers' scoring quintet in 71
st (28:05.72).
After taking next weekend off, Maritime will take part in the St. Joseph's LI Invitational on Oct. 17. The women's race is set for 11 a.m., with the men to follow at 12 p.m. It will be the Privateers' final event before the Skyline Conference Championships.
