Privateers Drop Skyline Tournament Contest at Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, NY – On Wednesday afternoon, the Maritime College baseball team traveled to Mount St. Mary for the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.  Needing a win to advance to the double-elimination portion of the event, the fifth-seeded Privateers (22-18) saw their season come to an end with a 9-1 loss to the fourth-seeded Knights (21-16-1) at the MSMC Baseball Complex.

After a scoreless first inning, Mount St. Mary took advantage of a Maritime error to plate two runs in the bottom of the second.  The Privateers responded in the top of the third.  Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) singled and Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) was hit by a pitch before Alex Bardi's (Wantagh, NY) RBI single brought Maritime within one.   However, the Knights put up a four-spot in the fourth to extend their cushion to 6-1.

It remained that way until the bottom of the sixth, when Christian Parisa roped a two-run single for Mount St. Mary.  In the eighth, another RBI single by Parisa put the Knights up 9-1.  Liam Horan then retired Maritime in order in the top of the ninth to eliminate the Privateers.

Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) finished 2-for-4 with a double, while Bardi went 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Ventura was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.  Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (5-5) got the start on the mound and lasted three innings.  He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, struck out one and walked one.  Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) surrendered four runs in one inning of relief before Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) and Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) each threw two innings.

As a team, Mount St. Mary had 16 hits in the contest.  Parisa collected five RBIs on three singles, while Tyler Crocitto ended up 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  Frank Signorelli was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Noah Anderson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Aidan Marshall also recorded a pair of hits for the Knights.

Pitching on three days' rest after hurling a complete game against Maritime on Saturday, Horan (4-2) went the distance on the mound.  He held the Privateers to one run on six hits, tallied six strikeouts and issued three walks.

This year marked Maritime's 13th consecutive appearance in the Skyline Tournament.  The Privateers have also posted at least 22 wins in each of their last eight full seasons (not counting the COVID-impacted 2020 and 2021 campaigns).
