MANSFIELD, CT – On Monday, the Maritime College baseball team visited Eastern Connecticut State for a non-conference tilt. Despite
Freddy Forgione's (Ronkonkoma, NY) 30
th career home run, the Privateers (12-5) suffered a 10-1 loss to the Warriors (15-5) at Eastern Stadium.
It was a 0-0 game until Eastern Connecticut State scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Warriors then put up a three-spot in the sixth and added two more in the seventh to make it 10-0. With two down in the top of the eighth, Forgione got the Privateers on the board with a solo shot to left, his seventh long ball of the year. That would prove to be Maritime's only run, however, as Eastern Connecticut State notched a 10-1 victory.
The Privateers were held to five hits in the game—Forgione's homer, doubles by
Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) and
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY), and singles by
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) and
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD).
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) (0-1) got the start on the mound and took the loss. He gave up five unearned runs on four hits, struck out two and walked one over 3.2 innings.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY),
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) and
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) all came out of the bullpen for Maritime.
Jason Claiborn went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Warriors. Ray Leonzi had two hits, including a double, and Ryan Parent scored three times. Hank Penders, meanwhile, finished 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Eastern Connecticut State starter Nathan Furnio (2-0) yielded just three hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out nine and walked one. Tyler Rice allowed Forgione's home run while also recording a walk and a strikeout in the eighth before AJ Rooks notched three strikeouts in the ninth.
Eighteen of the Privateers' final 20 games are Skyline Conference contests, including their next eight in a row. Maritime (2-0 Skyline) begins the string by hosting a doubleheader against Old Westbury (8-10, 4-2 Skyline) at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
