High-Scoring, Extra-Inning Affair Goes to New Paltz

THROGGS NECK, NY – In a contest that lasted 10 innings over three and a half hours, the Maritime College baseball team (10-4) dropped a 14-12 decision to New Paltz (8-7) at Reinhart Baseball Field on Tuesday night.  Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) recorded his 100th career hit in the game.

After a scoreless first inning, both sides batted around in the second.  Dillon Ristano belted a two-run homer for New Paltz, then the Hawks took advantage of three Maritime errors to add four unearned tallies and build a 6-0 lead.  The Privateers responded with a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning.  Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) singled with the bases loaded before Madigan beat out a double play ball, knocking in another run.  On the next pitch, Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) crushed a three-run homer to left that cut Maritime's deficit to 6-5.

The Privateers then went in front with four runs in the fourth.  Ventura led off the inning with an infield single, moved to second on Ian Wilson's (Bayonne, NJ) sacrifice bunt, and scored the tying run on Madigan's base hit to left.  After Forgione was hit by a pitch and Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) drew a walk to load the bases, Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) delivered a two-run single.  Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) followed with a double down the right field line that gave Maritime a 9-6 lead.

It would remain that way until the top of the seventh, when New Paltz scored six times to go back in front, 12-9.  However, the Privateers rallied to tie it with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Forgione started the rally with a single to center.  He moved to second on Bardi's walk, then scored on an error before Martinson was hit by a pitch.  Copozzi was up next, and he belted a two-run double to right center that knotted the score at 12-12.  Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) followed with an infield single, but Copozzi was left stranded on third.

Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) struck out the side in the top of the ninth, and Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) began the bottom half of the inning with an infield single.  After Leipold was erased on a double play, Forgione walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.  Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) struck out to end the inning, though, and New Paltz put up two in the top of the 10th.  The Hawks' Robert Gregory wrapped up the 12-10 victory by recording three strikeouts in the bottom of the 10th.

Maritime had 13 hits in the game, with Forgione and Copozzi each tallying three hits.  Forgione was 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Copozzi finished 3-for-6 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.  Martinson went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Madigan scored twice to go along with two RBIs.

Gavin McIntyre (Princess Anne, MD) got the start on the mound and lasted 1.1 innings.  He yielded six runs (two earned) on four hits and walked three.  Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) tossed 3.2 innings of shutout relief, holding the Hawks to three hits while striking out four and issuing three walks.  Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ), William Chu (Port Washington, NY) and Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) each tossed an inning before Kellner (0-1) went the final two and took the loss.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk with five strikeouts.

For the Hawks, Tommy Kreider finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI.  Ristano went 2-for-6 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Michael Boccarossa was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Starting pitcher Dylan Thomasson lasted 1.2 innings, surrendering five runs on four hits, striking out one and walking two.  Six relievers came out of the New Paltz bullpen, with Gregory (1-0) earning the win for his two scoreless innings of work.  He allowed one hit and one walk to go along with four strikeouts.

On Saturday, the Privateers (0-0 Skyline) begin their Skyline Conference schedule by hosting St. Joseph's Brooklyn (3-13, 0-2 Skyline) for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
