THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College baseball team wrapped up the regular season by hosting a doubleheader against Yeshiva on Sunday afternoon. Needing two wins to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament, the Privateers (27-13, 14-6 Skyline) got the job done, defeating the Maccabees (0-29, 0-20 Skyline) 17-1 in the opener before earning a 10-0 victory in the second game at Reinhart Baseball Field.
Maritime batted around in the first inning of Game 1, putting five runs on the board.
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) and
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) each hit a two-run double, and
Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) added an RBI single to center. The Privateers then scored three in the second, as
Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) extended his program record with his 13
th home run of the season, a two-run shot, while
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) roped an RBI double.
Frazzetta singled home a run in the fourth, then crushed a three-run homer in the fifth. Copozzi also homered in the inning. After Yeshiva got a run on back-to-back doubles in the sixth, Maritime tallied four more in the bottom half of the inning.
Blake Gnepper (Ottawa Hills, OH) doubled to left with the bases loaded, driving in two, and
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) hit one off the wall in right field for a two-run double that made it 17-1.
Ten different Privateers had hits in the game, and 11 scored at least one run. Frazzetta reached base all four times, going 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, a walk, two runs scored and six RBIs. Ventura finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, while Copozzi was 2-for-3 with a homer, three runs scored and three RBIs. Milone, meanwhile, notched two hits, including a home run, crossed the plate twice and drove in a pair.
Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) (3-2) got the start on the mound and earned the win. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out five over six innings.
Nicholas Capone (Deer Park, NY) pitched the seventh, giving up one hit and recording one strikeout.
Aden Frohlich went 3-for-3 for the Maccabees, while Sammy Greenberg finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jacob Shakin (0-9) took the loss after yielding nine runs (seven earned) and nine hits while striking out five and walking four over four innings of work. Benjamin Brener and Frohlich each surrendered four runs in an inning of relief.
After
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) walked and
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) singled to start the bottom of the first in game two, Milone gave Maritime the lead with an RBI single. Copozzi then knocked in a run with a groundout. Madigan doubled home a run in the second, and Shea's RBI groundout in the third increased the margin to 4-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Maritime picked up another run without the benefit of a hit. Milone was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on an error before scoring on a wild pitch. The Privateers added three runs in the sixth when Vafakos beat out a double play ball that would've ended the inning and Pinggera followed with a two-run blast to right center.
Leading 8-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Privateers plated two more to bring the game to an early conclusion. Forgione led off the inning with a bloop double and Milone was hit by a pitch before
Christian Ark's (Rocky Point, NY) pinch hit double. With two down, Milone came across on a wild pitch, ending the 10-0 Maritime victory and officially locking up the No. 2 seed.
Forgione had two of the Privateers' six hits, including his double, and scored twice in game two. Milone and Vafakos both crossed the plate twice, while Pinggera was 1-for-3 with his two-run homer.
Joseph Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (1-2) was excellent on the mound. He earned his first collegiate win after holding the Maccabees to three hits and one walk over six shutout innings. Sorge struck out nine.
Jimmy Tighe (Mineola, NY) pitched the seventh, allowing two hits and a walk while picking up a strikeout.
For Yeshiva, Shakin went 3-for-3. The rest of the Maccabees, meanwhile, were held to just a pair of singles by Avi Cohen and Adam Zahler. Zahler (0-6) also started on the mound and lasted six innings. He was charged with eight runs (four earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out three. Joshua Mintz gave up two runs on two hits and recorded a strikeout in 0.2 innings of work.
As the No. 2 seed, the Privateers will have a bye in the first round of the Skyline Tournament and advance directly to the double elimination round, which begins on Friday at St. Joseph's LI. Maritime's first game will be against the winner of the matchup between No. 3 Mount St. Vincent and No. 6 Purchase.
