PATCHOGUE, NY – Six years ago, the Maritime College baseball team celebrated winning the Skyline Conference championship on St. Joseph's LI's Gregg Alfano Field. On Sunday, the Privateers returned to the site of that 2017 title with a shot at another. It was not to be, however, as second-seeded Maritime (29-15) fell to top-seeded St. Joseph's LI (30-9) by a 10-4 count in the 2023 Skyline Championship Game.
After a scoreless first, the Golden Eagles plated four runs in the top of second (Maritime was the designated "home" team in the game). St. Joseph's LI had six hits in the inning, including four consecutive two-out singles. The Privateers got two back in the bottom of the second, though.
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) singled to left before
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) crushed a two-run homer that brought Maritime within 4-2.
St. Joseph's LI increased its advantage to 5-2 on Paul Gugliuzzo's sacrifice fly in the fourth, but
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) belted a two-run homer to right center in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 5-4 game.
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) doubled two batters later, but he was left stranded on second. That would prove to be Maritime's last hit in the game.
The Golden Eagles broke it open with a four-spot in the fifth, then added another run in the eighth.
Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) and Shea each drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth before Ventura flied to center for the final out. With the 10-4 victory, St. Joseph's LI claimed its second straight Skyline title.
