THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College Department of Athletics held its annual Awards Show on April 20 at Riesenberg Gymnasium. The two biggest awards of the night—Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year—went to men's basketball player
Ryan Donovan and
Rebecca Zareva of the women's cross country team.
Donovan was named First Team All-Skyline, Second Team All-ECAC and Third Team All-Metropolitan this season after leading the Privateers to their first Skyline Tournament appearance since 2010. He ranked third in the league in scoring with an average of 17.2 points per game and tallied 20 or more points eight different times. A two-time Skyline Player of the Week, Donovan scored his 1,000
th career point at Mount St. Mary on Feb. 14.
Zareva earned her second straight First Team All-Skyline selection after placing seventh at the Skyline Conference Championships. As a team, Maritime finished second at the Skyline Championships, its best-ever showing. She also led the Privateers to second place at the ECAC Championships, where she was sixth individually. Zareva ran three of the seven fastest 6000-meter times in program history this season.
Maritime's 2022-23 Rookies of the Year are
Tyler Anderson of the men's basketball team and
Jessica Magee of the women's swimming & diving team. The Unsung Hero Awards, meanwhile, went to football player
Michael Varela and
Anya Josberger of the women's soccer and lacrosse teams.
For the first time, the Coach of the Year Award was split into two separate honors, one for head coaches and another for assistants.
Justin Manjares of men's lacrosse was named Head Coach of the Year, while swimming & diving's
Devon Peal was the inaugural Assistant Coach of the Year winner. The Staff Appreciation Award, which goes to someone from outside the Athletic Department who goes above and beyond to help the Department and student-athletes succeed, was presented to
Elissa De Falco of the Humanities Department.
All 36 members of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student-Athlete Honor Society, were also recognized. In order to be eligible for Chi Alpha Sigma, student-athletes must be at least a junior academic standing, compete on a varsity intercollegiate athletic team, and maintain an overall GPA of 3.4 or higher.
In addition, each team honored its Most Valuable Player and Privateer Award winner. The individual team awards went to:
