THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College baseball team got outstanding starting pitching from
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) and
Brandon Stanley (Swedesboro, NY) against Baruch on Saturday. After Sullivan tossed a complete game three-hitter in a 2-1 victory in the opener, Stanley also hurled seven innings in game two, as the Privateers (7-6) earned a 4-2 win to complete a doubleheader sweep of Baruch (0-7) at Reinhart Baseball Field.
Playing as the "road" team on its home field, Maritime wasted no time getting on the board in game one.
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) led off the game with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on
Freddy Forgione's (Ronkonkoma, NY) double. Baruch tied it on Robert Wakely's homer in the bottom of the third, but the Privateers immediately regained the lead in the top of the fourth. After Maritime loaded the bases with one out,
Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) sent a ground ball towards shot. He beat the double play throw to first, though, allowing
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) to score the go-ahead run.
That was all the offense Sullivan needed. Joseph Cocozza's single leading off the fourth would prove to be Baruch's last base hit of the game. Sullivan (2-0) retired the final nine Bearcats he faced in the 2-1 triumph. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Copozzi reached base all three times he came up, going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases.
Baruch starter Nathaniel Demchak (0-3) was also solid in a losing effort. He went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Brian Baek pitched the seventh and gave up just a single to Vafakos.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, Baruch took advantage of a Maritime error in the bottom of the second. Jacob Auerbach reached on the miscue, then Brian Hwang crushed a two-run homer to right. Kenneth Taveras followed with a single, and Joseph Bello walked to give the Bearcats runners on first and second with one out. The runners were left stranded, however, as Stanley got out of the inning on a pair of popups.
It remained 2-0 until the fifth, when Maritime used a four-spot to take the lead.
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) and Vafakos started the inning with consecutive singles, setting up
Matt Milone's (Farmingville, NY) three-run blast to center field.
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) made it back-to-back homers for the Privateers, making it 4-2 with his solo shot to right.
Now staked to a lead, Stanley retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed a leadoff single in the sixth, but the runner was immediately erased on a double play. Stanley then came back out for the seventh and set the Bearcats down 1-2-3 to finish off the 4-2 win.
Vafakos was the only Maritime batter with multiple hits in game two. He finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Stanley (4-0) yielded two runs (one earned) on five hits, struck out four and walked one.
Jeremy Ramirez (0-2) went five innings on the mound for Baruch. He surrendered four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk. After finishing game one, Baek pitched two more scoreless innings in game two. He gave up one hit and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
Maritime has another doubleheader at Reinhart Baseball Field set for Sunday. The Privateers' twinbill against Lehman (0-5) gets underway at 12 p.m.
