Maritime Baseball's Season Comes to a Close with Loss to Old Westbury

Following a thrilling 3-2 win last night over St. Joseph's Long Island in the Skyline Conference playoffs, the Maritime College baseball team's season has come to an end as they lost to Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon.

The Privateers were one win away from playing USMMA in the Skyline Conference Championship on Sunday, but the Panthers posed a tough task for the young roster of Maritime. Old Westbury got off to a hot start and led 5-0 after four innings of play, but the Privateers had their chances offensively as they stranded five runners on base in the first two innings of action. Unfortunately, their unability to come up with the clutch hit proved to be the difference maker and the Panthers were able to extend their lead out of reach.

Maritime finally broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, with a bases loaded RBI from Jonathan Racanello (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle), but once again they couldn't turn it into a big rally and left two runners on base. The Privateers kept the offensive momentum going into the bottom of seventh as they scored twice more, but they trailed 11-3 and couldn't mount the comeback they needed. Maritime ultimately fell by a score of 14-4 and their season came to an end.

Offensively, graduate students Joe Cordero (Franklin Square, NY/Kellenberg) and Phil Russo (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) led the way with two hits each, while Cordero scored twice and Russo scored once with an RBI. Russo's season was highlighted by an impressive finish to the season, as he recorded 28 hits to stand alone at the top of the record books with 171 career hits.

The Privateers reached the postseason for the ninth consecutive season in 2021, and will look to keep the streak alive with a promising future ahead of them.
