The Maritime College baseball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Monmouth on Thursday afternoon in Fort Pierce, Fl. The Privateers pitched well and played stellar defense, but were unable to get the offense going as they were only able to pick up two hits on the day.
Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) got the start for Maritime and threw 5 2/3 innings while only allowing three runs on eight hits.
Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and
Keegan McDonald (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) finished the game in relief, combing for 2 1/3 innings and only one hit allowed.
Offensively,
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) and
Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) picked up the lone hits for the Privateers, but the offense couldn't get a rally going against a tough pitcher from the Fighting Scots. Tyler McDonald pitched a complete game in the win and struck out 10 batters.
"I'm very happy with our performance on the defensive end today," said head coach
Charlie Barbieri. "We pitched and fielded well to keep the game within reach, but I give a lot of credit to the Monmouth pitcher, he did a great job of throwing strikes and keeping us on our heels."
Maritime gets back on the field tomorrow, at 1:30 p.m. against Hood College as they will look to pick up their first win of the trip to Florida.
