THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College women's soccer team was unable to celebrate their senior night with a win as they dropped a close 5-3 game against St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Wednesday night. Prior to the start of the contest, the Privateers honored their two seniors
Ojaira Suero (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly) and
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia).
Maritime started out controlling the offensive momentum of the game as they registered three corner kicks and two shots in the first ten minutes of action. However, it was the Bears who were able to strike first in the 19th minute. Two minutes later, they made it a two-goal advantage, but the Privateers were able to respond. In the 27th minute,
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) put Maritime on the board off an assist from Autumn Mandaglio.
Although the Privateers entered halftime trailing 3-1, they came out of the half strong as
Brianne Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) took a cross from
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) and scored to bring it back to a one possession game. Unfortunately, St. Joseph's Brooklyn had the answer again and pushed it back to a two-goal advantage.
In the 65th minute,
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) added her second goal of the game to make it a 4-3 lead for the Bears.
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) placed a corner kick perfectly into the box and Wright was able to get her head on it and send it past the goalie.
Unfortunately, Maritime was unable to complete the comeback and fell in their final game of the 2019 season. Mackenzie Fabiani picked up five saves in goal as the Privateers fell to 5-12 on the year.
