YORK, Pa. – The historic Maritime baseball season came to a close on Friday afternoon as the Privateers fell to the Elizabethtown Blue Jays by the score of 13-5 from PEOPLEsBank Park in central Pennsylvania. The loss ends Maritime's run in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Freshman
Tommy Buckman (McLean, Va./McLean) led the Privateers with three hits on the afternoon while also collecting one RBI and scoring a pair of runs. Senior
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) capped off his record-breaking career with a pair of hits and also scored a run on the afternoon.
Rookie
Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) led the Privateers with two RBIs as he was 1-for-2 at the dish, while freshman
Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and junior
Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) each had one RBI apiece. Sophomore
Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and freshman
Dan Sinisi (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) each doubled and scored a run while senior
Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) rounded out his career and drew the team's lone walk of the contest.
Freshman
Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) went to the hill for the Privateers in search of his ninth win of the season, but was unable to convert as he went just 2 2/3 innings. Fellow rookie
Brady Dolan (York, Pa./Northeastern) came on went 1 1/3 innings and yielded one earned run in his outing.
Sophomore
A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) threw 50 pitches and got through three innings as he allowed two runs and struck out one batter. Freshman
Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) closed out the day on the hill for Maritime and did not allow a hit over his inning of work.
In the top of the first Maritime loaded the bases as McLaughlin walked, Russo was hit by a pitch and Diaz reached on an error. However, the Privateers were unable to convert as the Blue Jays turned an inning-ending double play.
Bruinsma went to the hill and retired the first three batters in order, but was touched up for three runs in the bottom of the second inning as Elizabethtown jumped out to an early lead.
Maritime's offense responded in the top of the third as Buckman singled and then stole second; two batters later McLaughlin singled to move Buckman to third before Russo hit a sacrifice fly. After McLaughlin moved up to second on a balk, Diaz singled up the middle to plate McLaughlin to make it 3-2.
Elizabethtown plated three more runs off Bruinsma in the bottom of the third before Dolan came on to retire the final batter of the frame.
In the fourth inning Maritime got a run as Buckshaw doubled down the left field line and moved up to third as freshman
Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) grounded out. Buckman followed with a knock through the left side of the infield to plate the third Privateer run.
The Blue Jays put the game out of reach with four more runs in the fourth, before adding solo runs in each the fifth and sixth innings off of Ammirati.
In the top of the seventh inning Buckman led off with a single followed by a single off the bat of Deddo. McLaughlin reached on an error that popped out of the third baseman's glove to load the bases with no outs. Russo reached on a fielder's choice as the fourth Privateer run scored before the Blue Jays got out of the frame with a double play.
After a quick top of the eighth, Paghidas came on and let up one run on a pair of walks and a few groundouts as Elizabethtown moved ahead by a 13-4 score.
In the ninth Sinisi led off with a bullet down the left field line as he legged out a double, Buckman grounded out to move Sinisi to third before Deddo picked up a sacrifice fly for the fifth and final Privateer run of the game.
Maritime concludes its season with an overall record of 26-13 as thee team registered the most wins in a single season in program history.
Elizabethtown (28-16) advances to the next round and will take on the loser of this afternoon's Alvernia/Johns Hopkins matchup tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. in York, Pennsylvania.
