PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The season came to a close for the Maritime women's soccer team on Wednesday evening as the Privateers fell to the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles by the score of 3-0 at the Danzi Athletic Complex on Long Island.
The Privateers were led by senior
Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who recorded two shots on the game including one shot on target. Freshmen
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and
MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) also recorded shots on goal in the loss.
Defensively junior
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) made the start in goal for the Privateers, and made six saves through the opening 45 minutes of play. Sophomore
Kayla Kelly (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) took over in the second half and also made six saves.
St. Joseph's scored in the ninth minute of play to take the early 1-0 lead, and added its second goal of the opening half in the 18th minute of play. As play progressed into the second half, the Golden Eagles added their third and final goal of the match in the 68th minute to cap off the scoring.
The Privateers had their best scoring chances from the 33rd minute to the 38th minute as the Privateers recorded a flurry of three shots. Avitto's shot was saved, followed by shots from freshman
Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and sophomore
Alison Gilbert (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst), both of which went high and off the target.
Maritime finishes its season with a 4-9-2 overall record with a 1-7-1 mark in league play. The Privateers return a strong core of talent to next year, and will build towards the 2018 season.
St. Joseph's (LI) (10-7-0, 6-3-0 Skyline) will head into the Skyline Conference Tournament, which begins on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles will be a higher seed on Saturday and host a home playoff game against an opponent still to be determined.
