THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team rallied back from a one-run deficit in the seventh inning to defeat the City College of New York Beavers, 6-2 in the Wednesday night non-conference matchup.
Freshman
Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) led the Privateers with two RBIs and a walk in the win. Senior
Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) added a hit, a walk, an RBI and scored two runs.
Sophomore
Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) finished off the scoring with a solo homerun to right-center field, his third of the year.
Freshman
A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) carried the load for Maritime, pitching 6 2/3 innings and striking out eight.
Pitching dominated the early portion of the game as the first three innings were scoreless. Ammirati was able to strand four runners over the first three frames.
Monahan walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Scerra's RBI groundout to second base to give the Privateers the 1-0 lead.
Maritime led until the top of the seventh when CCNY designated hitter Uche Nwokelo hit a two-run home run to right field to put the Beavers up 2-1.
The Privateers quickly answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) started the frame with a single up the middle and then he advanced to second as sophomore
Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) was hit with a pitch. Sophomore
Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) later hit a line-drive single to right centerfield that plated McLaughlin. As the order turned over, Monahan then singled to centerfield scoring Schiavoni. DiLeo scored on an errant throw from the outfield to make the score 5-2.
Semler homered to right center in the bottom of the 8th to give the Privateers the 6-2 lead.
Freshmen
Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood),
Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) and sophomore
Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) combined for the final 2 1/3 innings on the way to the victory.
Maritime (10-3) was outhit 10-7 by CCNY (1-19). City College left 13 men on base in the loss.
Maritime will look to continue their win streak tomorrow night, March 24, at 7 p.m. against John Jay on Reinhart Field.
