Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Soccer team started off their 2015 campaign with a strong 3-0 win over York (N.Y.). Junior
Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola), sophomore
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia), and sophomore
Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) tallied their firs goals of the season on the way to the win.

The Privateers dominated possession throughout the game, with 35 shots and 13 corners, compared to York's three shots and zero corners.

Athan led the team with three total points, one goal and two assists, to go along with three shots. Her goal came off a rebound from a 35-yard free kick. Athan possessed the ball and shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Woods had a strong game with 11 total shots, 6 on target. After an unsuccessful corner, Woods recovered a loose ball and scored in the top of the net from 15 yards out to put the team up 1-0 just before half. Avitto scored on a Privateers' counter attack in the 66th minute from a cross-field pass and then beat the goalkeeper to put the team up 3-0 and put the match away.

Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and sophomore
Tess Sala (Islip, N.Y./Islip) both had strong performances, totaling six shots on goal between the two.

Freshman
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) had a quiet game in goal thanks to the Privateers' possession and strong defense. She had three saves in the full 90 minutes. Havens had a huge save on a penalty in the 67th minute after a York counter attack.
The Privateers will look to move to 2-0, when the team travels to Maine for a pair of games this weekend on September 5th against Southern Maine. and September 6th against Maine-Machias.
