BRONX, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team dropped a non-conference matchup to the Lehman Lightning on Wednesday evening by the score of 1-0.

In the first half, Lehman controlled the early play with the first four shots of the contest, as well as the game's first corner kick.

Sophomore Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) broke the early drought for Maritime with the contest's first shot on goal in the 22nd minute that was stopped by Lightning goalkeeper Stephanie Gonzalez.

In the 29th minute of play freshman Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) registered a shot that was blocked, as the tide turned in favor of Maritime. Freshman Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) pushed a shot wide, followed by Athan sending one over the crossbar in the 31st minute.

Maritime had another flurry of shots in the closing minutes of the opening half, with sophomore Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) collecting a pair of shots, both off target. The first horn sounded to send the game into the halftime break with the match still scoreless.

Neither side could muster much offense through the first 10 minutes of the second half until Juliana Generoso took a shot that was stopped by Maritime junior Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) in the 47th minute. Just under 12 minutes later, Generoso took another shot in a one-on-one with Hoar and was able to capitalize to put the Lighting up by one.

With time slowly working against the Privateers, Maritime got a chance with a corner kick and kept up the offensive pressure as junior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) took a shot that was stopped. Avitto, Reynolds and Burns all recorded shots that were stopped by Gonzalez.

Freshman Olivia Mihaljevich (Leona Valley, Calif./Quartz Hill) took a shot with 90 seconds left that was stopped. Burns then sent a shot wide of the target, followed by another shot from Yee with three seconds remaining that was also stopped by Gonzalez, as she preserved her clean sheet.

Hoar falls to 0-3 on the season as she collected two saves on the evening, while Gonzalez made nine saves to earn the victory.

The Privateers led in terms of shots at a 16-10 clip, as well as corner kicks by a 6-4 margin.
