Women’s Soccer Succumbs to St. Joseph’s in Skyline Conference Loss

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team dropped its second match in Skyline Conference play on Wednesday evening as the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles won by a 6-0 score on Reinhart Field.
 
Maritime was led by junior goalkeeper Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East), who finished the match with 10 saves through 90 minutes of play. Sophomore Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) led the team with a pair of shots, while senior Gabrielle Fox (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and freshman Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) registered one shot apiece on the evening.
 
It took St. Joseph's just over three minutes to find the back of the net off of a corner kick to put the Golden Eagles ahead by a 1-0 score. St. Joseph's scored three more time in the first half, including two by Jennifer Martino, as the team took a 4-0 lead into the halftime break.
 
In the second half, Martino took over goalkeeping duties, while Katie McGarrell moved to a field position and scored the fifth Golden Eagle goal of the night in the 55th minute. St. Joseph's added one more in the frame to cap off the scoring at six goals for the evening.
 
In goal, Hoar finished with 10 saves as she yielded all six of St. Joseph's tallies, as she suffered her sixth loss on the year. Earning the win was McGarrell, who did not register a save in the first 45 minutes of play. Collecting the second half of the split-shutout was Martino, who collected a pair of saves in her 45 minutes of work.
 
Maritime (5-6-1, 1-2 Skyline) will resume league play a week from tonight as the Privateers will host Mount St. Vincent on Reinhart Field beginning at 7 p.m. Before the match the women's soccer program will be celebrating senior night as both Fox and classmate Jaime Rocco (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) will be recognized for their efforts with the team.
 
St. Joseph's (3-7-2, 1-2 Skyline) will also take on Mount St. Vincent in its next matchup, as the Golden Eagles will travel to take on the Dolphins this Friday, with the match slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
