THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2012) – The Maritime women's soccer team lost its Skyline Conference opener, 5-0, to St. Joseph's Friday at Reinhart Field. The defeat drops the Privateers to 0-8-0 (0-1-0 Skyline) on the season, while the Golden Eagles improve to 6-2-2 (1-0-0 Skyline).
Freshman keeper
Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made 10 saves on the night. Maritime produced three shots in the game. The first came in the 53rd minute, when sophomore
Gabrielle Fox (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg)'s (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) direct kick was gobbled up by St. Joseph's keeper Kayla Flowers.
The Privateers' best chances to get on the board came off the foot of freshman
Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) in the second half. In the 60th minute, Lavelle charged into the middle of the field and fired a shot from 25 yards out that Flowers had to jump to stop from going into the top of the net. The freshman nearly found the twine in the 79th minute, when her lob of a shot just grazed off the crossbar.
The Golden Eagles were led by Jennifer Martino, who recorded a goal and an assist. She scored the first goal of the game on a lob shot from about 40 yards out that went over everyone's heads, including Paczkowski, into the right side of the net. Three other players tallied goals St. Joseph's. Flowers ended the night with two saves.
Maritime returns to action next on Wednesday, Sept. 26, when the squad will play host to Skyline opponent Sage College. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
