Privateers Women’s Soccer Falls On The Road At New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2011) – The SUNY Maritime women's soccer team lost on the road in the first game of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament, 8-0, to the host New Paltz Hawks early Saturday. The defeat drops the Privateers to 1-1 on the season, whole the Hawks improve to 1-1.

New Paltz was attacking from the get-go, letting off 13 shots, including seven on goal that were turned away by junior keeper Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin). The Hawks finally broke through in the 15th minute, when senior Sherri Lajoie found the back of the net on a pass by junior Beth Bowling. New Paltz would score six more in the half and take a 7-0 lead into the intermission.

Maritime appeared to score its first goal of the game early in the second half when junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) put in an errant ball that came her way after a deflection, but the play was whistled for an offside. The Hawks found the back of the net for the last time in the 68th minute.

Hawks junior Shelby Kondelka led all players with two goals, while Lajoie, Bowling, freshman Sarah Painter, junior Samantha Abravanel, senior Shannon Cobb and junior Sarah DeMarzo each tallied one goal apiece. Freshman Rebecca Rothman had three assists for New Paltz.

In goal for Maritime, Marietta had 12 saves in the losing effort. For the Hawks, junior Stephanie Vega picked up the win, playing the first half and making two saves. She was replaced at halftime by freshman Kristen Tillyer, who faced one shot on goal and turned it away.

The Privateers return to action tomorrow in the final game of the tournament against SUNY Canton. First kick is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Hawks' Alumni Field.
