THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2011) – The Maritime women's soccer team won its non-conference tilt against the College of Saint Elizabeth, 1-0, Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers record to 2-5-1, while the Screaming Eagles fall to 1-6.
St. Elizabeth held the early shot total, but Maritime turned it on late in the half and it was Junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) who broke through with the first goal of the game in the 38th minute when her shot from right in front rang off of both posts and into the net. Freshman Melanie Lopez (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical) (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical) was credited with the assist.
In the second half, the Eagles had numerous opportunities to get the equalizer, but the fantastic play of the Privateers' junior keeper Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) kept St. Elizabeth off the scoreboard. Marietta made four saves in the second, including two on breakaways. For St. Elizabeth, senior keeper Catherine De La Cruz made five saves in the losing effort.
Maritime returns to action on Friday, when the team plays host to Old Westbury in the first home Skyline Conference game of the year. Game time against the Panthers is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
