ALBANY, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2011) – The Maritime women's soccer team lost on the road to Skyline-opponent Sage on Saturday afternoon, 3-1, in the Privateers' conference opener. The defeat drops Maritime's record to 1-5-1 overall (0-1 Skyline), while the Gators improve to 3-1 (2-0 Skyline).
In what head coach Laura Mooney called “the best effort the Privateers gave all season”, the game was scoreless throughout most of the contest. Sage broke through with the first goal in the 70th minute, however, when Rebecca Marszalek scored off an assist by Chelsea Martin. The Gators added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Lindsay Millett found the back of the net after getting a pass from Rebecca Doble.
Maritime scored shortly after in the 88th minute, when junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J/Seneca) scored a fantastic goal when she placed it perfectly into the upper 90, off an assist by freshman Melanie Lopez (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical) (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical). Just 19 seconds later, Sage scored to make it 3-1 when Millett scored her second goal of the game with an assist to Grace Collett.
In goal for the Privateers, junior Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) made a season-high 14 saves in the losing effort, while Brittany McDonald registered six saves for the victory for Sage.
The Privateers return to action on Tuesday night, when they host non-conference opponent St. Elizabeth. First kickoff between Maritime and the Screaming Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
