THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2011) – The SUNY Maritime women's soccer won it's season-opener, 10-0, Thursday night against Yeshiva University. The game was played at Reinhart Field with the Maccabees as the home team. With the victory, the Privateers start the year 1-0, while Yeshiva opens up the season with an 0-1 record.
Junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) scored three times to lead the way for the Privateers. All Trenkamp's goals were consecutive, as she scored two in the first half and the first of the second half. Maritime took a 5-0 lead into halftime, as senior Samantha Easterman (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) started the scoring just 3:50 into the game. In the 21st minute, freshman Kadie Hook (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) found the back of the net, followed closely after by classmate Sarah DeBerardinis (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore Senior) (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore Senior) in the 24th minute.
In the second half, Easterman scored again to make it 7-0, Privateers. Then three more players scored their first collegiate goals: freshmen Stefanie Biddle (Lexington Park, Md./Bethel) (Lexington Park, Md./Bethel) and Melanie Lopez (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical) ( Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders Trades & Technical) and junior Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin), who is the team's primary goalkeeper, but played on the field in the second half.
Seven different players recorded assists: DeBerardinis had two, while Hook, Trenkamp, Easterman, Biddle, junior AudryAnna Ward (Youngsville, N.Y./Lake Huntington) (Youngsville, N.Y./Lake Huntington) and sophomore Amy Hansen (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich ) (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) each had one assist.
Yeshiva had two players record shots, Rochelle Friedman and Sara Shamir. The Macs goalkeeper, Erica Hasten, recorded nine saves in the losing effort.
In goal for the Privateers, Marietta earned the victory after playing in the first half and making two saves. Sophomore Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) took over between the pipes for the second half, but had no shots come her way.
Maritime returns to action this weekend, when the team travels to the SUNY New Paltz Tournament. The team will take on the host Hawks on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 11 a.m., before concluding the tourney against SUNY Canton on Sunday, also at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available for both games at this site: http://www.sidearmstats.com/newpaltz/wsoc/index.htm.
