THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2011) – The Maritime women's soccer team defeated visiting NYU-Poly, 3-2, in Skyline Conference action Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers to 3-13-2 overall (1-6-1 Skyline), while the Fighting Blue Jays fall to 2-11 (0-8 Skyline) in defeat.
 
        Before the game, the Maritime women's soccer program paid tribute to its five graduating seniors Samantha Easterman (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), Ashley Edington (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Noelle Gajeski (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon).
 
        Junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) led the way for Maritime, scoring the first two goals of the game in the first half. Her first was down low off a pass into the middle by Easterman in the 17th minute and her second came in the 34th minute off a breakaway. That was also assisted by Easterman.
 
        Poly would get one back before the half ended, however, as freshman Desiree Kettell found the back of the net off a pass by classmate Sarah Castillo. The score was 2-1 in favor of the Privateers going into the 10-minute break.
 
        In the second half, Maritime struck again as a ball went through the 18-yard box and found the foot of junior AudryAnna Ward (Youngsville, N.Y./Lake Huntington) (Youngsville, N.Y./Lake Huntington), who kicked it in off the goalkeepers's hands in the 57th minute. Gajeski was credited with the assist as she guided the ball through the 18-yard box. However, in the 82nd minute a Maritime foul in the 18-yard box led to a penalty kick for the Blue Jays and sophomore Megan Hightower found the back of the net to make the score 3-2.
 
        NYU-Poly would not let up, as they fired off two more shots in the final eight minutes, one came on a breakaway that junior keeper Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) made a huge save on what would've been a game-tying goal with just over a minute left.
 
        Marietta ended the night with seven saves and earned her third victory of the season, while Poly freshman Christa Pappalardo made eight saves in the losing effort.
 
        Maritime returns to action on Thursday for its season finale against non-conference opponent John Jay. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
