THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2010) – The Maritime women's soccer team lost to non-conference opponent City College of New York, 5-3, Friday night up in Purchase, N.Y. In defeat, the Privateers fall to 2-13 overall, while the Beavers improve to 1-14.
Maritime got on the board first in the opening minute of the game when junior Sam Easterman (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) found the back of the net after a pass from sophomore Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca).
CCNY responded with five straight goals, the first two coming just over seven minutes apart towards the end of the first half. In the second half, the Beavers' Tabathia Azor sandwiched two goals around Francis Tapia's 52nd minute goal to put City College ahead 5-1.
Maritime rallied late, as Trenkamp scored a goal of her own in the 68th minute off an assist by junior Ashley Edington (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Bayshore, N.Y./St. Anthony's), before sophomore Liz Dragomir (Rye Brook, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) (Rye Brook, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) tallied the first goal of her career of a feed by senior co-captain Christina George (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold).
In net for the Privateers, senior Andria Thornton (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) made 13 saves in the losing effort, while CCNY keeper Jessica Cardona made five saves to secure the victory.
The women's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when the squad travels to take on conference opponent Purchase State at 4 p.m.
