THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2010) – The Maritime women's soccer team, led by five goals by sophomore Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca), defeated Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University, 8-1, Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers' record to 2-12 overall on the season (2-5 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 0-5 (0-3 Skyline).
Trenkamp scored the opening goal of the game off a great cross from deep down the right side by senior Christina George (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold) in the eighth minute. Just over a minute later, George tallied a goal of her own when she stole the ball from a defender near midfield and marched in on a breakaway and rifled the ball into the bottom left corner to give Maritime a 2-0 lead.
Trenkamp found the back of the net once again exactly one minute after George's goal to make it 3-0. It wasn't until the 41st minute that the Privateers scored again. This time it was junior Sam Easterman (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) who shot the ball straight up into the air and caught the goalie in an awkward position as she was backing into the net.
In the second half, Trenkamp scored three straight goals, before Maritime ended its scoring on the night when Easterman set up junior Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) beautifully on a 2-on-1 down low. Yeshiva senior Atara Kanarfogel scored with five seconds left on the clock to spoil the shutout.
Junior Ashley Edington (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Bayshore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) started in goal for the Privateers and played one half, making one save and picking up the victory before giving way to senior Andria Thornton (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties), who also made one save.
Maritime returns to action this Friday, Oct. 15, when the squad travels to take on the City College of New York. Game time against the Beavers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. up on the campus of SUNY Purchase.
